Prof Stephen Brown
Area of expertise: Cardiology, paediatrics
Faculty/Department: Health Sciences, School of Clinical Medicine

 

Prof Brown is the Head of the Division of Paediatric Cardiology in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at the UFS. He obtained his doctorate in Paediatrics at the UFS. He is also a fellow of the College of Paediatricians.


Prof Stephen Brown is a National Research Foundation C-rated researcher and convener of the Health Sciences 2 Panel of the NRF. He is co-director of Clinical Research in the Robert Frater Cardiovascular Research Institute within the School of Clinical Medicine, and Section Editor for the SA Heart Journal. He is also a reviewer for national and international journals in the field of cardiology.

He has a keen interest in research, with a focus on congenital heart disease, especially univentricular circulation and interventional cardiology. He has established his unit as the centre of excellence for percutaneous pulmonary valves and valve research in South Africa. Prof Brown’s interests have also expanded into the field of cardiac epidemiology, especially atherosclerotic disease and cardiovascular health planning for the central region of South Africa. He also collaborates with the Central University of Technology and maintains strong ties with the Catholic University of Leuven’s UZ Gasthuisberg in Belgium.
Prof Brown was named Bloemfonteiner of the Year in 2012 and received a Cum Laude award from the Kovsie Alumni Trust for his work in percutaneous valves. He is a board member of several national and international societies.
